Sisters living in Galway

The Benimerenti medal is presented to people who have exhibited long and exceptional service to the Church and their community.

Claude was presented with the medal in recognition of her work with Cura, from 1984 to 2008. Cura is a voluntary organisation, an agency of the Irish Bishops Conference. It offers support and help to women who are faced with a crisis pregnancy.

When Claude began working with the service it was just a phone line in our house in Sea Road, volunteers came to respond to calls.

Through her work the service developed, at first renting accommodation, then linking with families who provided space for the women. Claude was available to the women to listen, support and provide information on all aspects of their situations, her availability often meant calls during the night to assist in different ways.

At first the service was funded through many fund raising efforts; more recently it is funded by the Health Services so that it can be maintained and continue to offer a compassionate, non judgemental point of contact and practical support to women who find themselves in crisis.

The service in Galway is part of a national network, it continues with a counsellor who acts as coordinator.

She works with a Mercy sister, a group of part time counsellors and volunteers.
