Origin of the International JPIC Secretariat

Justice and Peace are at the heart of the mission of the Little Sisters of the Assumption..

Faced with the dire poverty of the workers’ families in the 19th century, our Founders, Etienne Pernet and Antoinette Fage, had the courage to offer a response based on Gospel values.
We continue to proclaim Jesus Christ, Saviour and Servant among the workers, the impoverished and the marginalised, so that they may value themselves as daughters and sons of God and keep alive the hope of being part of the world community.

In 1975, the situation of increasing injustice endured by those being oppressed led us to opt for Justice and Peace.
In 1981 we stated: “Countless people are subjected to violence, are hungry, their dignity shattered. it appears evident to us that “the struggle for justice and participation in the transformation of the world, is a constitutive dimension of the preaching of the Gospel…”
                                                                                                                                                         Rule of Life 21

In 1987 we set up the International Justice and Peace Secretariat.

 The Mission

* To strengthen, in coordination with the different bodies in the Congregation, the commitment for Justice and Peace lived out by the sisters according to the spirit of the Gospel.

* To give an impetus to the integration into our lives of the biblical, theological and spiritual aspects and the Social Doctrine of the Church which underpin the actions for Justice and Peace.

* To promote the understanding of social problems, of the political and economic systems, and their repercussions on the life of the planet and on the lives of the impoverished and their families.

* To seek alternatives to neo-liberal policies. A different world is possible.

 The orientations since 2005

We opt for a Culture of peace, Active Non-Violence and the Integrity of Creation, feeling that we are part of this complex and challenging universe, of a world that is wounded and yet full of potential.

We feel urged to:

* Generate a Culture of Peace and Active Non-Violence.

* Develop the feminine dimensions of tender-ness, of attention to life and of reconciliation.
* Promote alternatives favourable to respect for Human Rights and attention to creation so that environmental justice, in particular climate change, may remain a fundamental preoccupation.

 Fields of action :

In the situation on the ground
Every day we share the life, hopes and suffering of individuals and families in the poor and marginalised areas, in their critical situation as unemployed persons, immigrants, displaced persons without documents, refugees. We share their search for more human spaces conducive to developing relations, to solidarity and to faith sharing.

With Networks, NGOs, group and associations
We seek alternatives in order to act on the causes of hunger, the movement of populations and human trafficking.
We support policies for sustainable development, for food sovereignty, for responsibility in trade and just laws for the economic agreements.

Currently, we are part of the following networks:

- The NGO of the Augustinians (OSA) at the UN.
- AEFJN (Africa-Europe Faith Justice Network)
- Inter-Assumption
- Other local networks, groups, associations etc.
